Weather-related claims often begin with a simple statement—hail, wind, heavy rain, snow, freezing rain, or fog—but the research question is more precise: what reliable information is available for the reported place and time, and how does it relate to the observed damage and policy?
Canada’s official weather records and alerts provide useful context. They do not replace the property-specific evidence, policy analysis, or professional judgment required on a claim.
Six recurring weather questions
Hail
Hourly station records may report hail as an observed weather phenomenon. Because thunderstorms and hail cores can be localized, an observation at one station may not represent conditions at a property some distance away. Record station proximity and consider other reliable time-and-place evidence.
Wind
Review sustained wind, gusts where available, direction, observation time, and station exposure. Avoid applying a single generic threshold to every file: alert criteria and the significance of a measured speed depend on the event, region, structure, policy, and question being assessed.
Heavy rain and flooding
Separate the meteorological fact of rainfall from the mechanism by which water reached or damaged the property. Station precipitation, radar, municipal information, site grading, drainage, sewer conditions, and inspection evidence may answer different parts of the investigation.
Snow
Daily snowfall, snow on ground, and hourly observed snow describe different measures. A structural loading question generally requires more than a nearby snowfall total and may need site-specific or engineering analysis.
Freezing rain
ECCC hourly data may record freezing precipitation, while alerts provide broader event context. Accretion can vary with surface temperature, exposure, elevation, wind, and duration, so the reported phenomenon alone does not establish the load or damage at a property.
Fog and reduced visibility
Visibility observations can help frame collision or transportation research, but the station location, measurement time, road geometry, lighting, driver evidence, and other local conditions remain relevant.
Match the source to the question
ECCC’s historical hourly dataset includes temperature, precipitation, wind, visibility, pressure, and observed weather. The federal technical documentation describes its spatial resolution as point locations across Canada. This is the central limitation to keep visible: nearby is not the same as on site.
Official weather alerts answer a different question. They communicate hazardous conditions over an alert area and can help establish event context or operational awareness. Alert status or criteria should not be treated as a property-level damage threshold.
News and public reports may corroborate timing or regional effects, but they should be traced to the original source where possible. Publication time is not necessarily event time, and repeated stories may all depend on one initial report.
Build a transparent research note
- State the reported loss location and time window.
- Identify each source, observation time, and distance from the property.
- Separate recorded facts from interpretation.
- Note missing data, spatial limits, and conflicting evidence.
- Explain what additional evidence would resolve the remaining question.
- Return to the policy, physical evidence, and applicable claims procedure.
This structure is more useful than a bare “verified” or “not verified” label because another reviewer can see what the conclusion rests on and where uncertainty remains.
Why the discipline matters
Statistics Canada has examined how extreme-weather trends and catastrophic claims affect homeowners-insurance profitability and consumers. Insurance Bureau of Canada also reports substantial and rising insured losses from severe weather, including a record 2024. These sources support careful attention to weather risk; they do not justify assuming that every claim reported after a regional event shares the same cause or outcome.
