Alberta regularly experiences damaging hail, and parts of Calgary lie within the region commonly called Canada’s “Hail Alley.” The scale of the exposure is well documented: Insurance Bureau of Canada reported that the August 5, 2024 Calgary hailstorm caused approximately $3 billion in insured losses in just over an hour.
That industry loss figure establishes the importance of the event, but it does not answer the property-level questions on an individual file. A useful hail investigation separates regional event context from evidence about the reported location, time, and damage.
Start with time and place
Record the reported loss address, date, and best available time window before reviewing weather sources. Seemingly small differences matter because convective storms can be highly localized and because a weather station is a point observation rather than a measurement at the insured property.
Environment and Climate Change Canada’s hourly station dataset includes variables such as wind, precipitation, visibility, and observed weather phenomena. Its technical documentation identifies hail as one of the phenomena that may appear in hourly records. It also explains that the dataset has limitations and that only a subset of stations is included.
For a defensible research note:
- identify the station name and coordinates;
- record its distance and direction from the loss location;
- compare observation time zones carefully;
- note missing hours or fields rather than treating blanks as proof that nothing occurred; and
- retain a link or copy of the original source record where procedure permits.
Use several forms of evidence
Station observations can be valuable, but a localized hail core may pass between stations. Depending on the file and available records, corroborating sources may include official alerts, historical radar, photographs with reliable timing, emergency or municipal reporting, reputable local reporting, and inspection findings.
ECCC’s surface-observation manual distinguishes hail from small hail and describes when changes in observed hail or other precipitation can trigger a special weather observation. This helps explain what a coded station record means; it does not establish hail size or impact at a different location.
Keep damage assessment separate from weather research
Weather context should inform the inspection, not predetermine it. Material, orientation, age, maintenance, prior repairs, and exposure can all affect how surfaces respond. Compare observed conditions across elevations and components, document anomalies, and follow the organization’s requirements for specialists or engineers where appropriate.
Potential inconsistencies should be described objectively. Weather data alone should not be used to label a claim or claimant. The adjuster still needs to evaluate the policy, the reported facts, physical evidence, and any expert findings.
A practical sequence
- Confirm the reported date, time window, and precise location.
- Review nearby ECCC hourly observations and document station distance.
- Look for official alerts or other time-and-place corroboration.
- Compare the research with photographs and physical damage patterns.
- Identify gaps and decide whether more records or specialist input are warranted.
- State the limits of the available evidence in the file note.
